  • Madison General Insurance Director Mr Chabala Lumbwe
  • The 2018 Organising Committee,
  • Members of the Press,
  • Ladies and Gentlemen

It gives great pleasure this morning to have you all at this briefing as we launch the 5th edition of the Lusaka Lafarge Marathon (LLM) for 2018.

Let me start by recognising the commitment demonstrated by the Zambia Amateur Athletic Association (ZAAA), whose grip to this Marathon event has been phenomenal. The Lusaka Lafarge Marathon partnership with ZAAA dates back from 2012 since the inception of the marathon and has undoubtedly grown from strength to strength.

Ladies and Gentlemen, members of the Press, allow me to also take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the overwhelming support we received from you and several sponsors for the 2017 Marathon, which turned out a great success. The marathon attracted 2500 participants in all the races as compared to 785 that participated the previous year in 2016. This evidently is an indicator that Lafarge Marathon is slowly but steadily gaining momentum in this country.

Lafarge Zambia is committed to creating shared value within our communities hence every support rendered to the marathon is a fundraising initiative that we channel towards supporting the Lafarge Foundation. The Lafarge Foundation is the main vehicle through which we continue to address the needs within our communities, with the assistance of our employees and other stakeholders. Our focus is on improving education, environment, infrastructure as well as implementing health and safety, wellness and social cohesion.

This morning, it is with contentment that I announce the 2018 Lusaka Lafarge Marathon scheduled for 26th May, 2018. We have decided to move it from the initial 5 May to allow more people for registration and increase international participation. We have allocated this year’s marathon a budget of Nine Hundred Thousand Kwacha (ZMK900, 000). Our Target for all the races is 5000 participants which we know might sound ambitious, but highly achievable noting that Zambia is slowly having a paradigm shift towards health living. A health nation is a productive nation.

On this front therefore, Lafarge Zambia has partnered with the Malaria Elimination Centre and PATH to stamp out malaria by 2020. The Zambian government has made a bold commitment to malaria elimination and we, as Lafarge Zambia are pleased to the implementation of malaria interventions to help achieve that goal of a malaria-free Zambia. From this premise the theme for 2018 is “run to Kick out Malaria by 2020”. We challenge everyone to come on board and support this significant undertaking earmarked at having a healthy and prosperous country.

We will have runners from various countries including Switzerland, France, United Kingdom, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda South Africa and United States of America to mention but afew. This is to ensure we continue on the path of the Marathon not only being a sporting event but also promoting wellness in the work place, cohesion between different people and cultures and helps forge new business alliances. Ladies and Gentlemen, distinguished members of the Press, as we strive to continue promoting the Lusaka Lafarge Marathon to international standards, we value every feedback we receive from you. Both Negative and positive serve as our lessons for improvement of the next marathon being organised better. In an effort to accommodate some of the concerns and recommendations received last year, we have since adjusted the fees upwards to ensure improvements of fundamentals such road closure for safety and security of our runners, medical services, the full Marathon routing and certification with IAAF, Medals for the runners and other logistical requirements for the Marathon.

I therefore invite you to register online or visit the ZAAA office in person today. Participation is:

  • ZMW 350 for the marathon, 42.195 km,
  • ZMW 350 for the half marathon, 21.1 Km
  • ZMW 200 for the 10 Km race
  • And ZMW 100 for the 5km walk.

Last but the least, I would like to recognise some of our sponsors that have so far come on board; Madison General, InterContinental Hotel, PATH who have been working in collaboration with Zambia’s National Malaria Elimination Programme, Fairly bottlers, Reload logistics, Total Zambia , AB and David, to mention but afew. In addition, our partners Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA), Zambia Police and Lusaka City Council have made tremendous progress in ensuring we continue upholding high standards of safety throughout the event.

In conclusion, may I reiterate that the Lafarge Marathon remains a sporting event to aimed at raising our city Lusaka profile and we therefore invite more partnerships and co-sponsorships.. We have no doubt that ZAAA and our organising committee will work together as a team to ensure great success of this year’s marathon. We also believe that leveraging on our strong relationship with you the media; this event shall indeed be promoted to the fullest.

Having said all this I now declare the 2018 Marathon launched!

I thank you all for your attention.
