The Zambia Athletics Association (ZAAA) President Mr. Elias Mpondela,

2017 Organising Committee,

Members of the Press,

Ladies and Gentlemen

Good morning to you all.

Welcome to Lafarge Zambia Head Office and to the launch of the 2017 Lafarge Lusaka Marathon. I would like to especially welcome the ZAAA President, Mr. Mpondela, and further reaffirm our commitment to this partnership.

This year’s marathon has a budget of ZMW 800, 000. It has been scheduled for 29 April 2017 at Levy Mall. Our ambition is to have more co-sponsors and participants than last year. I am convinced we will achieve this. In fact, I challenge the organising committee to target at least 5,000 participants!

As a Marathon runner, myself, I look forward to running alongside all of you. I am also pleased to announce that we will have runners from various countries including Switzerland, France, United Kingdom, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda South Africa and United States of America. This has been made possible, in part, by leveraging the strengths of the LafargeHolcim Foundation, which advances the discourse on sustainable construction through its $4 million international Awards on Sustainable Construction which are currently taking submissions until 21 March 2017 when entries will close.

Apart from the Lafarge Lusaka Marathon serving as a sporting event promoting wellness in the work place, it continues to promote cohesion between different people and cultures and helps forge new business alliances.

Last year we received very positive feedback from you. One area of concern was the prohibitive participation fee and so today I am pleased to announce that the fees have been revised downwards. Therefore, I invite you to register online or visit the ZAAA office in person today. Participation is:

· ZMW 200 for the marathon, 42.195 km,

· ZMW 200 for the half marathon, 21.1 Km

· ZMW 100 for the 10 Km race

· And ZMW 50 for the 5km walk.

We have also introduced the Aerobics mania in the build up to/ and on the side lines of the event. I encourage you to tell a friend and register today!

This year’s theme is “Run for unity” which symbolises the need to work as a team if we are to achieve great results. We want to challenge everyone to be committed to this value as we work towards building a healthy and prosperous country.

We commit to upholding high standards of safety throughout the event. Our partners, Madison General, Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA), Zambia Police and Lusaka City Council among others, have made sure that all necessary mitigation measures are in place.

The Lafarge Marathon will continue to be a major event in the Lafarge Zambia annual calendar and we would like to thank all our existing co-sponsors for their support. We further invite new co-sponsors to be part of this exciting event. I wish ZAAA and the rest of the organising committee the very best in the preparations for this year’s marathon. I appeal to you, the media, to help promote this important event. I look forward to seeing you all on the 29 April 2017!

I thank you.
